6 creative PTA fundraising ideas you haven't tried yet

Fundraising can sometimes feel like a trip down memory lane, rerunning the same fundraiser each year. If your PTA is ready to infuse some fresh, new, creative ideas into your fundraising strategy, this is your year!

Unlocking your creativity to put on new fundraisers not only boosts community spirit and excitement, but it can also help you raise even more for your programs and activities. Infusing innovative concepts that you haven’t done before will help your PTA fundraisers stand out and inspire your parents and families, teachers and students.

Use this list to find a new fundraiser to run in your community. Or jumpstart your imagination and build off these ideas to try something different than you’ve done in the past.

PTA fundraising idea #1: Luxury item raffle

If you’re in a state that allows raffles, here’s an easy fundraiser you can run without having to get tons of volunteers. Buy a popular luxury handbag and sell raffle tickets within your school community for a chance to win the bag.

Handbags not quite the thing in your community? Raffle off some other wantable item like event tickets, high-end hotel vouchers, or a reservation and dinner at a hard-to-book restaurant. Just make sure you’re pricing your raffle tickets so that you’re covering your cost and raising money.

PTA fundraising idea #2: Cooking classes with local chefs

Great whether you want a virtual or in-person option, cooking classes with local chefs are a delicious fundraising option. By partnering with local chefs, you can develop a series of classes encompassing different types of cuisines for various skill levels.

Keep in mind, you’ll be able to have a much larger crowd for virtual classes, but you’ll need to make sure you have the right video setup to give participants the best experience possible. In-person classes will be smaller, but the ticket prices can be higher for the more personalized experience.

PTA fundraising idea #3: Paint the rock

You may have what you need for this fundraiser sitting on school grounds already. If there’s already a large rock at your school, you’re halfway there. If not, you can get one delivered to a prominent spot.

Sell painting rights to the rock on a weekly basis and watch your school community unleash their artistic talents while you raise money with a super-easy, creative fundraiser everyone will want to be part of.

PTA fundraising idea #4: Shop to Give

If you want to be really smart about your fundraising strategy, use a passive fundraising program like Shop to Give. Sign your PTA up, then get your school community to sign up too. They can select your PTA as their donation recipient so that the participating merchants they do their regular shopping and dining with make donations to your PTA.

Passive fundraising is as simple as can be and it helps you avoid donor fatigue from repeated appeals. It can also help your PTA smooth out the peaks and valleys of your fundraising year as it provides a consistent stream of fundraising dollars.

PTA fundraising idea #5: Neighborhood scavenger hunt

Finding ways to involve everyone in your community, including local businesses, in your fundraiser is a breeze with a neighborhood scavenger hunt.

You can incorporate local landmarks and businesses into your hunt easily, even partnering with local businesses to provide prizes or discounts for participants.

Doing a family-friendly neighborhood scavenger hunt as a fundraiser for your PTA is great for building mutual support in your community while raising money through registration fees to participate.

PTA fundraising idea #6: Family fitness challenge

A family fitness challenge encourages families to join together in various fitness activities while raising money. Challenges can range from traditional (like tug-of-war) to wacky (think dizzy bat!) so they’re accessible and inclusive for different age groups, fitness levels, and abilities.

You can involve your community through sponsorships and partnering with local fitness instructors or gyms to help run the event’s activities. In addition to the money raised from registration fees, you can also run a silent auction during the event and sell healthy concessions to raise even more.

Creativity is key

Mixing up the fundraisers you run to keep them fresh and new for your school community goes a long way toward higher engagement and higher fundraising totals.

Whether you use one of the ideas listed or come up with your own, you can inspire excitement and enthusiasm among parents and families, students, teachers, and your community. Happy fundraising!
